Best Striped Bass Spots in Long Island Sound: Thimbles to the Norwalk Islands

The Sound doesn’t fish like the open Atlantic coast, and that trips up a lot of anglers who learned their striper game on an ocean beach. There’s no true surf line here — instead you’ve got a 40-plus mile string of river mouths, boulder fields, mid-Sound shoals, and island archipelagos, and the fall run moves through all of it on a schedule set by water temperature and bait migration, not by the calendar. Here’s where I put my clients from September through the late-November close-out, west to east.

The Fall Run Timeline

Connecticut River Mouth

Starting in September, this is one of the most reliable staging areas in the western Sound. Small baitfish get swept out on a dropping tide and can’t fight the current — bass and bluefish stack up right where the flow narrows and dumps into open water. Fish the last two hours of the outgoing tide with a swimming plug or a jointed swimbait worked through the seam where river current meets Sound water.

Thimble Islands, Branford

A 365-island boulder-field archipelago that fishes completely differently from an open beach — this is technical, structure-oriented fishing. Live eels are the traditional producer here, but a Magictail Kill Shot Black Nickel Bullethead Jig worked slow along the boulder edges gives you the same bullet-shaped, snag-resistant profile without the bait-supply hassle — and because it’s an artificial, you’re not bound by the state’s circle-hook mandate that applies to natural bait.

Middle Ground Shoal, off Stratford (West Haven to Westport corridor)

This 40-mile stretch between West Haven and Westport is loaded with points, harbors, and mid-Sound structure, but Middle Ground off Stratford is the standout: a shoal that pushes up to 9 feet of water surrounded by 60-foot depths, creating a hard rip whenever tide runs against it. Bass and blues stack on the downcurrent edge of that rip to ambush bait getting swept over the bar. A Magictail Round Head Magic Mojo trolled at 2-4 knots through the rip, or a Big Eye Jig tipped with a soft-plastic paddletail and worked on the drift, both cover this water well. Silver Sands State Park nearby has public shore access with tombolos (sandbars connecting to small islands) that concentrate bait on either side.

Norwalk Islands

By early-to-mid November, bunker schools congregate around the Norwalk Islands before making the coastal push south, and this is peak topwater season along the craggy shoreline. A walk-the-dog surface bait — the Magictail Top Water Spook, wood-built for a denser, more consistent walking action — worked over active bunker schools at first light is about as visual as striper fishing gets. If the topwater bite shuts off, fresh bunker chunks on a circle hook (mandatory here under CT’s bait-fishing regulations) will out-produce artificials once the fish drop deep on the bait balls.
