Speed is the variable anglers argue about most and adjust least. I watch boats leave the dock, set a spread, lock the throttle at 7.5 knots, and never touch it again all day — even as the target species, sea state, and bait presentation change under them. That’s leaving fish in the water. Trolling speed isn’t one number; it’s a range that shifts with what’s on the end of your line and how rough the water is.

That range is wide because two variables are doing all the work: whether you’re pulling naked or plugged bait, and how rough the water is. Both deserve their own breakdown.

Why Bait Type Changes Everything

A naked ballyhoo — no skirt, no head — has almost no built-in stability. Push it past 5 knots and it starts to spin, wash out, and lose the swimming action that triggers a strike. That’s why naked bait spreads for tuna and marlin stay in the 4–5 knot range.
