Texas Wahoo Season: Best Months & Trolling Spread

Texas Wahoo Season: Best Months & Trolling Spread

If you’ve planned a Texas wahoo trip around fall because that’s when the rest of the Gulf lights up, you’re a season early. Texas runs a different clock than Alabama or the Florida Panhandle. The real window — the one experienced Port Aransas and Gulf Coast crews actually target — starts with the season’s first hard cold fronts in November and holds through the dead of winter into March. Locally, it’s known as “Wahoo Winter,” and it’s worth building a trip around rather than defaulting to a fall date because that’s the pattern elsewhere in the Gulf.

The Real Season

Period What’s Happening
November First strong cold fronts trigger the start of the bite
December – February Wahoo Winter — the season’s most substantial concentrations
Into March Extended tail end of the peak window

Two independent sources agree on this timing: charter guidance out of Port Aransas puts the season at November through February with a mid-winter peak, while a dedicated feature on the Gulf Coast wahoo fishery names the window “late December to mid-March.” Between them, the honest answer is that Texas wahoo fishing opens with the first real cold fronts in November and holds strong straight through the winter — the opposite seasonal pattern from a lot of other Gulf species, and worth planning around deliberately.

Where to Find Them

Texas wahoo concentrate along the 100-fathom curve and near the state’s extensive network of offshore oil rigs, both of which hold the temperature breaks and structure that attract bait — and the wahoo that follow it. These are genuine offshore trips: reaching productive water typically means a 10 to 12-hour run, not a quick morning trip.

Trolling Technique

High-speed trolling with deep-diving plugs or rigged ballyhoo produces the majority of winter strikes. Work the temperature breaks along the curve and around rig structure the same way you’d work any current edge — cover water at speed until you mark bait or get a strike, then work that same contour.

Joe Shute Wahoo Cruiser 10oz

The Joe Shute Wahoo Cruiser 10oz is built for exactly this style of fishing — engineered to stay submerged and track true at speeds of 10+ knots where lighter lures skip out and fail. Its heavyweight construction gets a bait down and holds it there through a long high-speed run out along the 100-fathom curve.

  • Weight: 10oz
  • Recommended speed: 7-13 knots
  • Pro-Staff Tip: Wahoo respond to speed — if bites aren’t coming, bump the troll up 2 knots before changing lures or position.

HooMagic Glow Series

Winter trips often start and end in low light given the long runs involved, and the HooMagic Glow Series puts a glow-painted head in the water for the gray-light hours before full sunrise — a real edge on a 10-12 hour trip where the boat is running lines before the sun is fully up.

  • Weights: 1oz, 2oz, 3oz, 6oz
  • Target species: Wahoo, Tuna

Magictail HooMagic Glow Series Trolling Lures

Joe Shute Keel Weighted Series

Running multiple lines at high speed on a long troll increases the odds of lure spin killing a presentation, and the Joe Shute Keel Weighted Series solves that specifically — an internal keel weight keeps a ballyhoo tracking straight and true even at the higher speeds a winter wahoo spread demands.

  • Weights: 5oz, 8oz
  • Rigging: Runs with or without a chin weight, tuned for ballyhoo

Rod for the Run

Given the length of a typical Texas wahoo trip and the size of fish taken along the 100-fathom curve, the Magictail Offshore Stand Up Rods in the 60-100lb power class give the leverage to fight a big winter fish without a fighting chair, over what’s often a long day already spent running to and from the grounds.
